Figures Artist Statement

I’ve always enjoyed drawing and painting figures, especially in interesting compositions. Much of my early inspiration came from life drawing classes at art school courses. Figures were featured prominently in my architectural perspectives.

My figures are drawn from observation and memory as I seldom work from models.

Cottage life is a big influence. A person’s relation to water intrigues me. I sketch and paint lots of swimming and water play scenes.

I do like composing female figures with birds; especially with waterbirds, as I find the combination fascinating. I set up compositions of the two in interesting ways to reinforce our relationship with nature.

To enhance the storytelling aspect of my artwork and to provide interest, I include figures in my aviation and landscape paintings.

I continue to pursue interesting compositions with figures.
